Carotid Artery Disease & Stroke Prevention
Carotid Artery Disease and Stroke Prevention in Kissimmee, FL
Hannum Vascular is a well-regarded vascular surgery and treatment facility in Kissimmee, FL. Stroke prevention and protection against carotid artery disease are two of our specialties. Carotid artery disease impacts the arteries in your neck, which supply much-needed blood to your brain. When fatty plaque builds in the arteries, it narrows them and reduces the blood flow. As a result, your brain receives less oxygen. Carotid artery disease is closely linked to memory loss, difficulty speaking and seeing, paralysis, strokes, and death. We will look at your medical history, risk factors, and symptoms and devise an effective treatment.
How Do We Diagnose Carotid Artery Diagnosed?
Once your friend or family member is at the hospital or our office, the specialist will use an ultrasound to determine if blood flow travels through the artery. They may use other scans to verify that blood flow is not properly traveling. CT scans, computed tomography scans, and MRAs are also common tools. Once we diagnose a stroke or carotid artery disease, the treatment is surgery, medication, and lifestyle changes.
How to Tell Whether an Individual Has Had a Stroke
The most common symptom of carotid artery disease is the least expected – a stroke. They occur suddenly and without forewarning. All you can do is watch for the physical symptoms of an in-progress stroke, which can make the difference between successful prevention of serious aftereffects. If you suspect a family member is having a stroke, they will show some or all of the following signs:
Time is of the essence in this situation.
If they are having trouble standing or walking without losing their balance, you should be concerned.
Ask the person in question if they have experienced any vision changes, such as blurriness, loss in either eye or double vision.
The easiest way to tell is by asking the person to smile. One side of his face will droop.
Ask the person to raise both arms. If one drifts down, it is a sign of a stroke, and you should dial 911.
Ask your friend or family member to talk to you by getting them to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred?
